Gynecomastia (Breast Reduction for Men)
Gynecomastia, a condition of over developed or enlarged breasts in men, is common in men of any age. It can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity conditions, disease or the use of certain drugs. Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impair your self confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition.
Gynecomastia is characterized by
*Liposuction: In cases where gynecomastia is primarily the result of excess fatty tissue, liposuction alone may be used.
*Excision: Excision techniques are recommended where glandular breast tissue or excess skin must be removed to correct gynecomastia. Excision also is necessary if the areola will be reduced.
How it is performed?
Typically, male breast reduction surgery involves both liposuction and direct excision. Small incisions are made underneath the breast and/or within the borders of the areola. Exact incision types and locations are adjusted based upon the extent of your procedure. Liposuction is performed to remove fat and excessive glandular tissue and skin are removed via direct excision. Liposuction is also used to help contour the chest. The incisions are closed with external and internal sutures. Surgical tape may be applied as a dressing.
What to expect after surgery?
This procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you will go home the same day as your surgery. You will need to wear your compression garment post-operatively, and you will be prescribed oral pain medication to help with any discomfort or soreness that you may feel. Bruising, fluid retention, and swelling are common after this surgery and will subside over several weeks. Final results may be obscured until all of the swelling has resolved.
